In tribute to Indiana University President Emeritus, Myles Brand
The School of Informatics mourns the passing and pays tribute to the life of former IU President (1994-2002) Myles Brand, who passed away on Sept.16 from pancreatic cancer.

IU Bloomington School of Informatics becomes School of Informatics and Computing
BLOOMINGTON - The Indiana University Bloomington School of Informatics was re-named the School of Informatics and Computing effective July 1. This change was made to reflect the composition of the school, which since 2005 has included both informatics and computer science programs.
"The new name better depicts what we are as a school," said Dean Bobby Schnabel. "In addition, it positions us well with our peer institutions, such as Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science, Cornell University's School of Computing and Information Science, Georgia Tech's College of Computing, and the University of California-Irvine's Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences."

IU School of Informatics records milestone; first-ever PhD now at renowned institute
BLOOMINGTON -Indiana University's School of Informatics, founded in 2000 as the first school of its kind in the United States, has officially awarded its first PhD in informatics. The doctoral degree to James Costello was formally recorded by the university on August 31.

IU to lead nationwide research network to expand supercomputer capabilities
INDIANAPOLIS - A group of information technology researchers at Indiana University has been chosen by the National Science Foundation to lead a four-year, $15-million project to develop new software to link together the supercomputers of tomorrow and enable new approaches to scientific research for problems of massive scale. $10.1 million will come from the NSF, with project partners providing the balance.

Computer Science Alumnus to Receive Distinguished Asian Pacific American Alumni Award
BLOOMINGTON - Entrepreneur Anurag Mendhekar (MS'94, PhD'98) of Los Altos, Calif., founder of Blue Vector Systems and twice an alumnus of the Indiana University School of Informatics, will be the 2009 recipient of the IU Asian Alumni Association's Distinguished Asian Pacific American Alumni Award.

Informatics Alumni Association board grows
BLOOMINGTON - The IU School of Informatics Alumni Association board met in Bloomington June 13, 2009 to introduce 7 new members and kick off the start of the new school year. Welcome Mindy Buher, MS '07; Greg DeaKyne, BS '04; Colin Koops, BS '05; Megan Lewis, BS '02, MS '04; Jason Sisk, MS '03; Beverly Walker, BS '97; Jake Barna, BS '05. The board setup five working teams organized around communications, events, awards, market research, and student relations. School of Informatics Alumni Association Fall Board Meeting, Wednesday, Sept. 30, 5-6:30 p.m.
The next meeting of the IU School of Informatics Alumni Association Board of Directors will be held September 30th in University Place Conference Center, Suite 241, on the IUPUI campus and in the Metz Boardroom in the Virgil T. DeVault Alumni Center on the IU Bloomington campus. We welcome all to stop by and share their thoughts on being a graduate of the IU School of Informatics.
Special Interest Conference on Design of Communication, October 5-7, Bloomington
The School of Informatics is a title sponsor (along with the IU Kelley School of Business) of the Special Interest Conference on Design of Communication (SIGDOC 2009). The conference will be held October 5-7 at the IU Memorial Student Union on the Bloomington campus. Rob Pierce (BA'82) a computer science alumnus currently employed at IBM is one of the prime organizers of this event. This conference bridges higher education and industry, with a focus on technical communication. Full conference or single day registrations are available at http://www.sigdoc.org/2009/.

School of Informatics Alumni Association Hoosier Village Tailgate During IUB Homecoming, Saturday, October 17, 4 p.m.
Join fellow Informatics alumni for Wacky, Wild, Crimson Style at the ultimate tailgating experience. Hoosier Village is located adjacent to the DeVault Alumni Center, directly across from Assembly Hall and Memorial Stadium at 1000 E. 17th St. in Bloomington. There will be special seating for Informatics alumni, live music, merchandise, games, your favorite tailgate food, a cash bar and plenty of Hoosier spirit! The Informatics tailgate will begin at 4 p.m. followed by the game rally at 5 p.m. Tailgate cost is $15 per person and $6 for kids ages 12 and under. Game tickets (group discount) are $20 for Hoosier Village attendees. RSVP by Wednesday, October 9 to Sarah Pappano at spappano@indiana.edu, (812) 855-6120 or (800) 824-3044. Please indicate the number of people attending Hoosier Village and the number of game tickets needed. Tickets will be held under your name at the main entrance to Hoosier Village.
Life Sciences Focused Speed Networking, November 12, Indianapolis
Informatics Career Services Office at IUPUI has organized a series of events to help connect employers and Informatics students. The November 12 event focuses on Life Sciences and will take place from 2 - 4:00 p.m. in the ICTC building first floor lounge. World Usability Day Conference, November 12, Indianapolis
The School of Informatics is a sponsor for the 2009 World Usability Day organized by the Indiana Chapter of the Usability Professionals' Association. This year's theme is sustainability as it relates to usability and product development. This year's event takes place from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm in the IUPUI Campus Center. Registration is $35 for professionals and includes the conference fee (lunch, handouts and prizes) and a one year membership to the Indiana Usability Professionals' Association. Normally, the Indy UPA membership is $20. If you prefer not include the Indy UPA membership, the registration fee is $30. Students pay $10 to attend the conference

Student Capstone Presentations, December 11, Indianapolis
Alumni are invited to attend these biannual presentations of student projects. This semester's projects will be presented on December 11 from 4 - 8:00 p.m. in the ITCT building on the IUPUI Campus.
