Bloomington School of Informatics becomes School of Informatics
and Computing
BLOOMINGTON - The Indiana University Bloomington School of
Informatics was re-named the School of Informatics and Computing
effective July 1.
This change was made to reflect the composition of the school,
which since 2005 has included both informatics and computer
science programs.
"The new name better depicts what we are as a school,"
said Dean Bobby Schnabel. "In addition, it positions us well
with our peer institutions, such as Carnegie Mellon University's
School of Computer Science, Cornell University's School of
Computing and Information Science, Georgia Tech's College of
Computing, and the University of California-Irvine's Bren School
of Information and Computer Sciences." Read more.

of Informatics alumni preparing for 2nd annual Blog Indiana
conference
INDIANAPOLIS - For a second consecutive year, an educational
conference bringing together Indiana bloggers is planned for late
summer. Blog Indiana 2009 - the brainchild of informatics alumni
Noah Coffey (BS'03) and Shawn Plew (BS'04) - will be held August
13-15 at the Informatics and Communications Technology Complex at
IUPUI. The IU School of Informatics is a conference co-sponsor.
Blog Indiana 2009 is designed for Hoosier bloggers and social
media users as the three-day conference promoting education, innovation
and collaboration among Indiana's rapidly expanding blogging
community.
Organizers say that Blog Indiana 2009 is appropriate for both
experienced bloggers and those new to blogging. Sessions will
include topics on blogging for beginners, using social media to
build a business, monetizing a blog, political blogging, and more
advanced topics.
Students, educators, non-profit executives, hobbyists and
professionals are encouraged to attend to network and learn.
Experience with blogging or social media are not requirements to
participate; anyone with an interest in technology and new media
is welcome to attend.
Registration for the general conference is limited to 200
attendees; registration for the single-day higher education and
non-profit summits will be limited to 100 each.
A discounted registration rate is available to IU School of
Informatics faculty, staff, students and alumni. Read more.

call for cybersecurity plan; IU announces new Security Informatics
master's degree
BLOOMINGTON - During a visit to Indiana last year,
then-presidential candidate Barack Obama announced his intentions
to create a new "cyber czar" post to "strengthen
our cyber defenses in the 21st Century." Indiana University's
School of Informatics faculty were already on the same mission.
With oversubscribed undergraduate courses in computer security
since 2006 and national job opportunities in cybersecurity
climbing to near the top of all information technology offerings,
the nation's first School of Informatics at the time was already
positioning itself to meet Obama's challenge.
That foresight and planning comes to fruition this fall when the
School of Informatics welcomes its first class of students -- one
of whom includes a Fulbright Scholar from Bahrain -- to its new
Master of Science in Security Informatics program. The program
will be directed by Jean Camp, an associate professor of
Informatics. Read
