Overview

Security Informatics is the study and design of security technologies within these contexts. Security Informatics integrates heuristics from the social sciences and economics of risk with secure systems design. Security Informatics builds upon strong theoretical foundations to construct practical solutions for the intertwined challenges of security and privacy. Security Informatics addresses both immediate problems of today, such as phishing, and emerging research problems, including privacy in ubiquitous computing environments. Security Informatics focuses on a holistic view of security by looking at both technical, user and organizational aspects. Traditional computer security programs have focused only on the technical aspects, which is at least partially responsible for some of the modern attacks, such as phishing. This professional, industry-oriented graduate program is designed for students with undergraduate degrees in computer science, electrical engineering, management information systems, economics, informatics or related disciplines who seek advanced training in Security Informatics.

Security Informatics MSc Degree ( Approval is pending by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education)

The Security Informatics program is built upon three columns. First there is the study of security. Second is the understanding of informatics core, which consists of courses on social or organizational informatics of security. Third is the professional element that requires application of the three areas of knowledge in a comprehensive applied manner. Security Informatics is also available as an area of concentration within Masters in Computer Science

Security Informatics is centered on the core protocols and practices of information technology security and its use. The Security Informatics curriculum includes all subjects central to computer security: mathematics, protocol analysis, system and network security. It also naturally dovetails with the span of material pertaining to informatics. Indeed, Security Informatics is security integrated with human-computer interaction, social engineering, science informatics, and information technology rather than isolated from the large economic and social milieu.

HCI - Security Informatics Degree Program

The HCI-Cybersecurity (HCI-S) master's degree program is a new program built upon the high quality and flexibility of the HCI program to train designers to assess and build security interfaces. The designers will not be designing security protocols but rather using security tools to build security into interfaces which they design.

Upon graduation, students in this program will be design professionals with an area of specialization within cybersecurity. The students will be particularly valuable to e-commerce companies struggling with customer trust; enterprises trying to implement identity management; and others for whom security is a strategic tool rather than a goal in and of itself.
