Will Odom “As computing technology continues to move beyond the workplace and into everyday life, new perspectives are needed to account for the complexities of human nature. The HCI/d program strongly focuses on a progressive human-centered approach, providing wide-ranging theoretical and practical skills, while avoiding the common pitfalls of a technology-centered perspective. The marriage of HCI and design provides a unique opportunity to become grounded in methods traditional to HCI, in addition to pursuing design theory and research. After returning from the 2007 international CHI conference, I realized how ahead of the curve this program is in regards to its perspective and approach.”

“The diversity in faculty backgrounds and research interests as well as their willingness to work directly with students is my favorite thing about this program. The close knit group of faculty members actively engages students both inside and outside the classroom, crafting a context for personal discussion and development as well as firsthand research experience. Faculty members’ collectively diverse backgrounds and the program’s openness to new ideas afford students the potential to refine their practical skills, creatively develop their own design philosophy, and pursue their future goals.”

“As with any graduate school program, things are often pretty hectic. The smaller class size and close relationships you form with fellow students makes even the busiest times much easier to deal with. Discussing coursework with a group of friends and exchanging our perspectives has made the Informatics graduate school experience much more enjoyable and meaningful. The inviting atmosphere, along with numerous student events played a significant role helping craft long lasting professional and personal relationships throughout the course of the program.”

“In my free time I enjoy music production, reading, and cavorting with my friends and colleagues.”
